On Wednesday 7th November at 6.30pm, St Giles’ Church will host an informal concert marking the centenary of the end of World War I.
‘Music & Stories for a past century’ will feature period music with letters and accounts about the people who lived in Camberwell a century ago.
Like many communities, Camberwell changed dramatically during the war and there are fascinating stories about how local people adapted to a new way of life. There will be accounts of the 1917 zeppelin airship raid on Camberwell and a description of what a night out at Camberwell Palace of Varieties might have entailed in 1914. Poignantly, letters from ex-pupils of Wilson’s Grammar school to their old headmaster will be read.
The concert will feature the 23rd Camberwell Scout Group and music will be provided by Camberwell Community Choir and Year 6 pupils from Lyndhurst Primary School.
All are very welcome to attend this free, community event. Seating is limited, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. Doors open at 6pm and refreshments will be available. Approximate length: 75 mins.
